HOW TO GET A CRACKING IMAGE
HELP ME GET YOU...
As a photographer I am not a contortionists (as much as I think I am still a youngster) & my camera gear can only do so much.
A few guidelines if you want a top image of you on the move.
If you see me or my signs:
SLOW DOWN or at least KEEP IT STEADY & SMOOTH
If you suddenly accelerate hard & fast I can not keep a nice steady pace with you - the chances are you will not be sharp, probably just a blur! When I'm standing by the road anything over 40+mph & it's a hell of a job to keep up with you smoothly when you are quite close to me. Tuck yourself in if you want, leave it to me to make you look fast.
I use a fairly slow shutter speed unlike some photographers to get that movement in the image, just leave it up to me to make you look like you are on the move & not static.
If you are in a group:
SPREAD OUT
If you are close to each other there's no way I can pan round & pivot back quickly enough to catch everyone individually... someone (or often more with bigger groups) will be missed! The more of a gap the better. Try to be at least 5 seconds between yourselves.
PASS ME AS MANY TIMES AS YOU CAN
If you feel inclined & it’s safe to do so, please feel free to turn around & pass me more than once, the more times you pass the more chance of a good image (or more). I always appreciate a wave/thumbs up etc but I certainly wont hold it against you if you don't, I would rather you have full control of your bike than be waving at me. Just remember to make sure you stay safe when turning around.
IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT FOR A PHOTO!
Please remember that the road is NOT a race track, keep your front wheel down & knee off the ground.
Just because I have my camera trained on you heading towards me doesn't mean I am actually taking your photograph, it is probably me just locking focus ready for you to get closer to me so please don't bother lifting that front end.
Us biker photographers are now starting to get flack from some other motorists saying we are encouraging anti-social riding, not true on my part, I want you to slow down & keep it smooth & sensible, after all if you do something stupid & crash it doesn't get you any images & a very expensive repair bill!
I have been just along the road from a nasty accident that put the rider in hospital (I do not know the full story of what happened as it wasn't within my view). This closed the road which meant I lost several hours of my session which probably cost me quite a few sales! No images = no sale for me which is not good for my bank balance. As I headed down the road to the accident scene I could see the rider laying in the road with other bikers around him, it was a horrible feeling in my stomach as I walked towards the scene as I had no idea on his condition!
Please just keep it sensible & let my photography skills make you look good.
If you want wheelie photos then sorry I'm not your photographer & I guess you can probably find one elsewhere... Just because you may have seen a wheelie photo on other photographers webpages/social media pages does not mean we all do it!
Keep your speed safe & steady - I will do the rest...
These three images below show that you do not have to be 'giving it some beans' to get a good action image! These images were taken at a local bike night, the riders were heading in & out of the venue & were doing I would say between 20-30mph! I was standing roadside right next to the entrance road, I was able to drop my shutter speed to get a more dramatic image because the riders were riding fairly slow & predictable! So it's not about the faster the rider goes by, it's down to keeping it steady & then I can do what I do as a biker photographer!
Even on a fast stretch of road...
Keep that speed sensible & steady. If you can? & ONLY if it is safe to do so make a few passes & I will work my magic! These guys below kept to a sensible speed & were smooth when passing, they also made a few passes. Once I had the 'keeper I was able to drop my shutter speed & this is what we got! You do not need to try anything risky to look good, as I've said above - Just leave it to me to make you look good.
